Ryan Garcia had his 'brain function' tested by commission as his 'mental health evaluation' results are in

Ryan Garcia had to undergo a mental health evaluation requested by the New York commission ahead of his fight against Devin Haney.

During the pre-fight press tour in February, Garcia claimed he was drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

The New York commission intervened and travelled to the star fighter's training camp in Dallas, where he underwent a battery of tests.

The commission tested the 25-year-old's brain function and gave him a standard competency test, which he passed, according to ESPN.

Asked about Garcia's situation, the commission said that it 'works to protect the health and safety of all participants in combative sports and to preserve the integrity of combative sport competition in New York State'.

But their decision to test his wellbeing didn't sit well with him as he felt 'demeaned' and 'targetted'.

Garcia initially refused unless Haney was required to do so.

He said: "I felt demeaned... I definitely felt isolated and I felt targetted. I didn't feel good about them wanting to do a mental evaluation.

"It kind of makes me doubt myself. It kind of hurt me and like if this causes real mental issues, I'm going to sue you."

'King Ryan' admitted that he 'got cleared from the commission to fight after the evaluation and drug test'.

His promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, said: "Physically, the commission wants to make sure that he's been training and he's been working out and everything.

"Ryan's in great spirits," he added. "He's in great shape... It's a big fight for him. He would be stupid if he wasn't in training."

Garcia missed weight for his Brooklyn showdown against Haney, meaning he won't be able to win the WBC super-lightweight world title.
