F1 set to bring in major rule change to finally 'improve competitiveness'

Formula 1 is set to make a major change to the points system from 2025 to try and make both the team and driver standings a more accurate and competitive representation of the sport.

One of the biggest criticisms of Formula 1 in recent years is the lack of competition with Red Bull and Max Verstappen dominating the sport since 2021.

The 2022 regulation changes alongside the costcap were designed to bring the field closer together and allow for closer racing.

This appeared to have worked exceptionally well during the early stages of 2022 as Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen looked to be locked in a title battle that unfortunately didn't materialise and Red Bull have dominated ever since.

Following the backlash of the current state of the sport, F1 bosses are reportedly set to make a new major change for next season.

According to The Times, there will be a complete overhaul of the points system so from next season the top 12 will score points as opposed to just the top 10 in the current system.

The report states that the idea was originally suggested by one of the teams, who brought it to the attention of the F1 commission who will hold a meeting this week to discuss further.

The suggestion has been relatively well received by the other teams, with little opposition from the leading teams while those at the back are on board as it will directly benefit them.

The prospect of a revised points system has been a talking point for a while, and Laurent Mekies, the Visa Cash App Red Bull team principal recently gave his thoughts on why change is needed.

“Even the bottom five teams are large organisations now and it’s very difficult to explain to the outside world, to our partners, and to our fans, that we battle for a P11 that actually grants zero points,” He said.

While racing at the front of the field has taken a backward step since the new regulations, the back of the grid is remarkably close with all the teams so close together on performance.

Some of the best action we see each race is for positions in the bottom half of the grid, so the new points system would add value to the sensational efforts of the drivers fighting lower down the order.
