What a player.

Eight years ago today Alessandro del Piero scored a brilliant goal against Champions League and the least we can do to honour the Juventus legend is make it our Goal of the Day. Take a bow Alessandro.

Juve had been relegated to Serie B on the back of the Calciopoli scandal for the 2006/07 season but their legendary number 10 stuck with them. Del Piero would capture the top goal scorers title as the Old Lady won the second division.

On return to Serie A the then 33 year old would continue his excellent form and finish top scorer again in the 07/08 season as the Turin club finished third in the league and earned a return to the Champions League at the first time of asking.

However they found themselves in a group with Real Madrid as well as Zenit St Petersburg and BATE Borisov.

Having beaten Zenit at home, through a Del Piero strike, they then drew away to Borisov. Next up were back to back games against Real, starting with the home tie.

The Spanish side included the likes of Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Cannavaro, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart and Ruud van Nistelrooy. And while that was a good line up the Old Lady included Giorgio Chiellini, Del Piero and Pavel Nedved.

And it was Claudio Ranieri's side who made the better start. First Nedved had two dangerous crosses cleared and the it was the Italian number 10 who stole the show with his brilliant strike on five minutes. The former Padova man played a one-two with Amurai and struck from 25 yards brilliantly past Casillas.

Amauri would add to the lead for the Italians before the Spanish side hit back from Van Nistelrooy but it wasn't enough to deny the black and whites the win.

In the away leg just two weeks later Del Piero would score twice as his side secured an unlikely away win and top the group. What a player!
