Liverpool Flop Lazar Markovic Reaches New Low At Anfield

He joined the Premier League team in 2014 but he's only played 19 times in the league and won't be adding to it anytime soon.

As far as transfers go Lazar Markovic can definitely be filed in the folder marked 'Premier League flops.' The Liverpool player's failed move away from Anfield this summer has made him fall to a new low.

I'm going to be honest when I first saw this story my mind kind of went "oh yeah, I remember Lazar Markovic, where's he playing these days?" because I had absolutely no recollection of him still being a Liverpool player.

The Serb moved to England to play for the Reds in the summer of 2014. He came from Benfica with an ever growing reputation and a price tag of £20 million from Portugal.

He started his first season in the north west with 34 games in all competitions, including nine in the league, scoring three times as well. He then had loan moves to Fenerbahce, Sporting, Hull and Anderlecht in the next few years.

He was expected to move to the Belgian club in the summer but the deal fell through when they two parties couldn't agree on personal details for the player, leaving him at Anfield for the final year of his contract.

This week he hit a new low during international week. Those not on international duty were given last week off but, according to the Liverpool Echo, Markovic was made to train with the under 23s.

As well as training with them he was also part of a behind closed doors friendly against Crewe for Neil Critchley's under 23 side.

The 24 year old didn't make it into Jurgen Klopp's 25 man squads for either the Premier League or Champions League meaning he's only available to play EFL and FA Cup games for the Reds this season.

The former Partizan player's contract expires at the end of the 2018/19 season when his Liverpool nightmare will come to an end.

Crewe manager David Artell said after his side's friendly against the Liverpool youngsters that he was impressed with Markovic, "They had Markovic with them and he was a class above. It was a great experience and the players can really see the benefit of it."

So that's one location for him to look at when his time at Anfield finishes.
