Sheffield Wednesday's Squad Numbers For New Season Are A Bit Of A Mess

Sheffield Wednesday's Squad Numbers For New Season Are A Bit Of A Mess

Just wrong.

One of football's pet hates, at least for me, is the inept use of shirt numbers.

Typically, you have your 1-11 in which a player is allocated a relevant number for the position they play in - for example a left-back would wear No.3 while No.7 would belong to a nifty right winger.

As the game has evolved, numbers have changed, where you might have someone like Ronaldinho wearing No.88 or Mario Balotelli wearing No.45 everywhere he goes, because they can. I'm fine with that.

But Sheffield Wednesday have committed a terrible crime in football with their latest squad numbers for the new campaign.

For some reason, 20-year old Goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith is wearing No.2 for the coming season, which is just utterly dreadful. And to make it worse, Steven Fletcher, former Burnley, Wolves and Sunderland striker, has been allocated the No.6 shirt. He plays as a striker lads, that's just wrong.

It's like on FIFA Ultimate Team when all the squad numbers for your players at the start are all jumbled up. Sheffield Wednesday have no excuses though, because they are an actual football club.

Anyway, there were a flurry of responses to the squad numbers announcement...

I fancied Sheffield Wednesday to get promoted this season with the squad they have, but if they were being judged on your use of squad numbers (thankfully that's not a thing) they would be nowhere near the top.

What do you think about the Owls' numbers changes? Let us know in the comments?
