Many were sympathetic to Argentina after their unexpected 3-0 loss to Croatia.
But one man who used the opportunity to rub salt in Argentina's wounds was former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. And it's no wonder why.
During the 1986 World Cup, in the quarterfinals, England famously faced-off against Argentina and lost 2-0, thanks to a Diego Maradona brace.
His two goals in that game have gone down in history, as they reflect Maradona, showing him as one of the greatest players in the history of football, while also reflecting some of the controversy that make up his character.
In the second half of the now infamous tie, England defender Steve Hodge's scuffed clearance entered the Three Lions box and fell in between the 5'5 foot high Maradona and the 6'1 foot Shilton.

There was only one winner here, which is why, instead of heading the ball, the Argentina attacker rose up and whacked his fist on the ball. It ended up in the net and referee Ali Bin Nasser of Tunisia didn't see the foul and gave the goal to Argentina.
His second goal was an individual masterpiece and the game finished 2-0, but it's also been thought that the first goal - which has since been labelled 'The Hand Of Goal' as per the scorer - was pivotal in deciding the swing of the game. Maradona, in short, robbed England's World Cup chances in 1986 through this goal.
Shilton, it seems, has been holding onto a grudge. He took to Twitter and shared his pleasure at Argentina's undoing at the hands of Croatia last night, a match which finished 3-0.
In his post, he included the famous image of the Hand of God, and another, of Maradona at last night's Group D encounter, with Shilton's smiling face alongside. Ouch.
Safe to say, social media enjoyed that one - the reaction is glorious.
But some of the reaction has back-fired on Shilton.
