Mauricio Pochettino compares Cole Palmer to Man Utd flop who endured nightmare spell at Old Trafford

Mauricio Pochettino compares Cole Palmer to Man Utd flop who endured nightmare spell at Old Trafford

The Chelsea boss has drawn comparisons with the two players.

Mauricio Pochettino has compared Cole Palmer to one former Manchester United player who endured a difficult time at Old Trafford.

Palmer moved to Chelsea from Manchester City on transfer deadline day for a reported £45 million and has not looked back since.

The 21-year-old has registered 11 goal contributions in 18 appearances and even taken on penalty-taking duties for the Blues.

His form also earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad in the autumn and looks on track for a place at Euro 2024 this summer.

Pochettino has since waxed lyrical about the winger and even compared him to former Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria, who worked under the Argentinian whilst playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "In the position that he plays, and because he's a left-footer and because he has some similarities and the quality, he's a potential Angel Di Maria.

"Angel is a world champion [with Argentina in 2022], he was in Paris [Saint-Germain] with us, and is an amazing player.

"He [Palmer] has the capacity and the potential to be close to him, with time. He's still far away, but this type of player that can link, can be a playmaker, have the capacity to score, assist, it's this type of player like Angel."

Discussing how Palmer has settled into life at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino added: "Always you expect when you sign a player, you expect that they perform in the best way.

"But of course he's performing really well from Day 1, he's adapted very well to the club, to the team-mates, to Chelsea life, and yes it's amazing, because always you expect the player can perform well, but he's doing excellent."
