Liverpool want former Man City defender to be long-term Virgil van Dijk replacement

Liverpool want former Man City defender to be long-term Virgil van Dijk replacement

Liverpool are monitoring a Premier League defender.

Liverpool are monitoring a former Manchester City defender as their long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk, according to a report.

Van Dijk issued an ominous update on his Liverpool career following Jurgen Klopp's shock announcement before backtracking.

The 32-year-old has been at the club since the 2017/18 season following his £75 million transfer from Southampton.

He's helped the club win the Premier League and Champions League, with the Dutchman returning to his best form this season.

However, he made an uncharacteristic error in his side's 3-1 defeat to Arsenal last weekend.

Ahead of planning for life without Klopp, Liverpool are keen to recruit during the summer transfer window and have their eyes on a centre-back.

According to The Standard, Liverpool are keeping tabs on Tosin Adarabioyo, who is out of contract at Fulham at the end of the season.

Adarabioyo's contract expires in the summer, with Serie A side AC Milan also interested in signing the defender.

Liverpool's interest in the 26-year-old comes after the Reds need English players to meet their UEFA quota for homegrown players in the Champions League next season.

Fulham, though, are preparing to offer the Manchester-born player a new contract to fend off interest.

They have signalled their intent to restart negotiations over a fresh deal after summer talks broke down.

Adarabioyo is open to prolonging his stay at Craven Cottage as he boasts a good working relationship with Fulham boss Marco Silva.

He will decide his future at the end of the season.

Adarabioyo began his footballing journey at Man City's youth academy. He played eight games for the Blues, but never made a Premier League appearance for the club.

He had loans spells at West Brom and Blackburn Rovers before joining Fulham on a permanent deal.

Adarabioyo has played 11 league games this campaign, scoring one goal.
