Erik ten Hag could anger Liverpool fans with his take on Luis Diaz VAR offside controversy

Erik ten Hag spoke to the media.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag could anger Liverpool fans with his take on the VAR controversy in the Merseyside club's game against Tottenham.

Liverpool promised to “explore a range of options available” Sunday after claiming sporting integrity was undermined after Luis Diaz’s goal was ruled out against Tottenham.

Diaz’s goal was disallowed for offside after the VAR believed the on-field decision had been to award the goal.

Refereeing body PGMOL have since described the incident as a "significant human error". Liverpool, however, said the explanation was “unacceptable” and called for a "review with full transparency".

The PGMOL added, immediately after Tottenham's 2-1 win: "This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention."

Speaking ahead of United's Champions League encounter against Galatasaray on Tuesday night, Ten Hag was insisted he trusted the standard of officiating in the Premier League.

The Dutchman said: "I don't give comments often on refereeing because they do what they need to do.

"The standards need to be high. You can expect, the fans can, a high standard, so it should be because it's the Premier League. I'm sure they do what they can, I trust them."

Before Liverpool's statement on the matter, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said his side's defeat came in "the most unfair circumstances" with "crazy decisions".

The German added that the PGMOL statement admitting wrong-doing "doesn't help", referencing the apology Wolves received for the decision not to award a penalty at Manchester United on the opening matchday of the season.
