Rio Ferdinand tips Wrexham to complete 'Hollywood' signing that would be the biggest in their history

Ferdinand believes Wrexham should make a move.

Rio Ferdinand believes Wrexham should make a 'Hollywood' signing that would be the biggest transfer in the club's history.

After securing a second promotion in as many seasons, Wrexham are preparing for life in League One next season.

It's been a rapid rise from the National League to the third tier for the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, so squad reinforcements are going to be needed.

The club recently released its retained list, and confirmed that club captain Luke Young and fan favourite Ben Tozer will be moving on when their contracts expire this summer.

The Welsh club have been linked with plenty of talents, including some currently playing in the Championship.

The biggest name tipped to join the club is Jamie Vardy, who recently helped Leicester secure promotion and an instant return to the top flight.

The Premier League and FA Cup winner scored 20 goals during the Foxes' title-winning campaign, but his contract is due to expire next month and he is yet to pen a new deal.

Speaking on his FIVE podcast, former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand tipped Wrexham to make a move for the 37-year-old striker.

"The only club I'd like him to go to now, if he's going to leave, would be Wrexham," Ferdinand said.

"Because it's got a bit of a Hollywood feel, and he's had a Hollywood career I think."

Vardy took an unconventional route to stardom, playing non-league football with Stocksbridge Park Steels, Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town until the age of 25.

He joined Leicester in the Championship in 2012 and made his Premier League debut two years later, age 27.

Vardy has already confirmed he has not plans to retire this summer, but offered no clarity regarding his contractual situation at Leicester.

"I’m not ready to hang the boots up yet, the legs feel fine," he said.

"I feel as fit as I ever have, so we’ll just see what happens.”

Speaking exclusively to SPORTbible, Wrexham executive Humphrey Ker refused to rule out the club signing Vardy this summer.
