How Wrexham could line up in League One after summer transfer spending spree

How Wrexham could line up in League One after summer transfer spending spree

Wrexham have secured back-to-back promotions under Phil Parkinson and could be about to splash the cash in the summer.

Wrexham have secured a second consecutive promotion under Phil Parkinson and will be playing League One football for the first time in 19 years next time.

The Welsh outfit were lurched in the National League for a 15-year period but with the financial backing from Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, they are now living in dreamland.

Wrexham sealed promotion to the third tier with a 6-0 hammering of Forest Green Rovers early this month and have taken 85 points from 45 games.

They have the highest wage bill in League Two by some distance and will be right near the top of the third tier when it comes to salaries.

But with ambitions to one day be a Premier League side, Wrexham will no doubt look to improve their squad with a slew of new arrivals for next season.

SPORTbible has had a go at predicting how they could line up at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

One of Wrexham's top transfer targets for the summer is a player who has already featured for them this season.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo signed on loan from Arsenal after Ben Foster made the decision to retire from football for good just a month into the season.

He has been named in the League Two Team of the Year for his impressive displays and Wrexham are desperate to sign him permanently.

His contract expires in the summer but a queue of clubs in the Premier League, Championship and Europe are said to be keen.

Wrexham play 3-5-2 and we expect Max Cleworth and Eoghan O'Connell to still be in that back three, with James McClean staying around for a second season at left wing-back.

But on the opposite flank, League Two Player of the Season Jodi Jones could be an excellent addition.

He registered an incredible 23 assists in 42 games for Notts County, who are 14th in League Two.

Norwich City's experienced defender Ben Gibson is an option at centre-back, with his contract nearing expiration.

In midfield, Elliott Lee will retain his spot but could be joined by two realistic signings in Joe Allen and John Lundstram.

Both will be available on a free, with Wrexham only having to fork out on wages.

Up top, talisman Paul Mullin will look to continue his incredible exploits in the third tier.

But his goalscoring burden could be reduced if Wrexham get their top target. The Red Dragons are eyeing a club-record move for Notts County's Macaulay Langstaff.

Wrexham have been admirers for a long time and tried to get a deal done last summer.

After hitting 42 goals in the National League, he's followed up with a 28-goal season in League Two.
