England Under 21s got their Euro 2019 campaign underway in a dramatic match against France and Phil Foden opened the scoring with a fantastic solo goal.

Gareth Southgate's England team may have failed to win silverware in the UEFA Nations League but the women aren't the only ones to rectify that this summer with the under 21s playing their Euros in Italy.

On Tuesday night Aidy Boothroyd's side, packed with plenty of exciting talent, took on France Under 21s in their Group C opener.

Despite France getting a controversial penalty in the first half it took till the second half for the deadlock to be broken and it was done so in some fashion by Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden:

The teenager, who is still only 19, is no stranger to excellent performances at international tournaments.

He was part of the under 17s team that reached the finals of the Euros in 2017, where he was included in the Team of the Tournament, and later that year won the Golden Ball for best player as England won the Under 17s World Cup.

The Manchester City youngster's goal drew all sorts of praise on social media, including comparisons with Lionel Messi:

Jake Clarke-Salter gave away the first half spot kick when he was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball but Dean Henderson, in net for England, saved Moussa Dembele's penalty.

After Foden opened the scoring the Three Lions had a Ryan Sessegnon goal disallowed after Dominic Solanke was offside in the build up.

Hamza Choudhury then gave away a second penalty and was sent off for a foul on Jonathan Bamba but Houssam Aour hit the post.

Unfortunately for Boothroyd's side they couldn't hang on with 10 men as Nanitamo Ikone beat Henderson with just minutes left after the Manchester United keeper had had a brilliant game.

Deep into added time Aaron Wan-Bissaka scored an own goal to break England hearts and give France the three points.

Despite all the drama the match will be best remembered for Foden's contribution.
