Superlatives and hyperbole are thrown around a lot in football, especially on commentary and in writing, but it's not too far to say that Phillip Lahm is a legend of the game and he's set to retire in the summer.

The defender turned 33 in November and there was talks at the beginning of the summer that this season would be his last as a player.

Bayern are playing Wolfsburg in the German Cup tonight and before the game Germany magazine Bild reported that come the end of the season the full back would no longer be playing.

According to the report the mainly one club man, he spent a season on loan to Stuttgart, was offered the job as Sporting Director but he's turned that down.

Lahm has won the Bundesliga seven times with Bayern and that is likely to become eight by the end of the season with Bayern currently leading the league by four points at the half way stage.

The Munich born defender won the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and then retired from international duty straight away.

He's won the Champions League just once with Bayern and was twice on the losing side in the final.

Tonight marked Lahm's 500th appearance for the club and he was honoured before kick off:

They'll be lots of offers for Lahm to become a coach when his playing career is over.

What a player, let's enjoy him for the last few months of his career.
