Sergio Aguero Reveals He Was Inspired By Michael Owen

These days Michael Owen is best known for being a poor commentator and pundit but once upon a time he was a striker good enough to inspire Sergio Aguero and one of the reasons the Argentine supported Liverpool.

For one generation Owen is an awkward commentator who says things like "if they score more goals than the opposition then they'll win," and "they rarely lose when they don't concede" and at best maybe remembered for the end of his career at Stoke City.

The older football fans amongst us will remember one of the best young strikers to ever make it in the Premier League, who lit up Liverpool's team for a time, earned a move to Real Madrid and of course that goal against Argentina at the World Cup.

Perhaps it was that goal that had a big impact on Sergio Aguero or maybe it was his time at Anfield scoring 118 goals in 216 Premier League goals and winning the Ballon d'Or in 2001.

Whatever it was the Manchester City forward revealed in a Q&A that Owen along with Liverpool wearing the same colour as his beloved Independiente led him to support the Reds as a child in Buenos Aires:

Liverpool's front line of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah is pretty good right now but even Jurgen Klopp would admit that he wouldn't mind if Aguero had turned his love for the Reds into playing for them.

In 12 Premier League games against the Anfield side he's scored six times, although he didn't have much impact in their Champions League games last season, and has scored 146 goals in his time in England for the English champions.

Despite Owen being Aguero's inspiration the former Real Madrid forward's most famous club goal is arguably the one against City in the classic 4-3 derby day win for Manchester United in 2009.

Aguero isn't the only player to have ended up playing for the team he supported's rivals with Owen himself being an Everton fan as a youngster, as was Jamie Carragher. John Terry supported Manchester United before becoming Chelsea captain and of course Harry Kane has that famous picture of him in an Arsenal shirt.
