A young Celtic fan rang up his beloved club to apologise for missing a game and explain that is was because he had a friend's birthday party to attend.

Hoops-mad Louis Kayes, aged five, was so plagued with guilt after missing Saturday's 2-0 win over Motherwell at Parkhead that he had to phone and apologies.

The youngster, from Moodiesburn, North Lanarkshire, was forced to give up his ticket for the Scottish Premiership match because it clashed with a friend's birthday party.

Mum Lisa described to the Daily Record how she'd overheard Louis on her phone that he'd taken from her and soon realised he was talking to the club:

"I saw Louis with my phone. And then I heard the recorded message you get when you phone Celtic, He had the phone on the loudspeaker function.

"Before I knew it I heard him telling the club that he wouldn't be at the match because he had to go to his friend's birthday party.

"I said: 'What are you doing? You'll be costing me a fortune.' But he just said he was letting Celtic know the reason why he wouldn't be at the match.

"I had just spent a while explaining to him that because of the birthday party he wouldn't be able to go. He wasn't happy about it and I think he was just wanting to explain to Celtic the reason for his absence."

However the initial phone call wasn't enough for the youngster with his mum also revealing that even on the day of the match he was worried about his favourite player Scott Brown and manager Brendan Rodgers realising he was missing: "Even when we were driving to the party he let it be known that Scott Brown would notice he wasn't there. Then he said he was worried that Brendan Rodgers would notice too."

The young Hoops supporter has since turned his attention to Wednesday's Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach - which he definitely won't be missing.

And he's predicted a 3-1 victory for his club, but confessed to feeling some pre-match nerves.

His mum added: "He's possibly the most passionate five-year-old I know in terms of supporting Celtic. He doesn't like to miss a game.

"I think Celtic-Motherwell is the last home game he'll miss in a while. I don't think we'll be getting him to many other things on a Saturday afternoon."
