Bayern Munich host Arsenal in the Champions League last of 16 tie on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena but they look set to be without one of the most important players.

In what is a less than ideal injury blow for Carlo Ancelotti and Bayern, Xabi Alonso pulled up in training with what is said to be a problem with his right knee.

Shortly before today's training session finished, Alonso suffered the injury and had to exit the session prematurely because of the pain he was in.

Once physios had attended to him, the former Liverpool midfielder had to be transported back inside the club's training complex on a Golf Cart.

German outlet BILD reported the story and posted pictures of the training injury:

All those connected with Bayern will be hoping the injury to Alonso isn't too severe but it doesn't look too promising at this stage, with just two days to go before the eagerly anticipated game between the two sides.

Like in previous seasons, Alonso has been a permanent fixture for the Bavarians this term and has made a total of 22 appearances in all competitions.

Bayern already having injury issues going into the game, with Jerome Boateng and Franck Ribery set to be unavailable for selection.

Even at 35, Alonso is recognised as one of the most gifted midfielders in the world, with his wonderful passing range keeping Bayern ticking over.

If he does have sit out the game against Arsenal, it will certainly be a big boost for the Gunners.
