Great to see.

Chelsea are making a point of showing how well regarded and appreciated their former players are.

While the emphasis is understandably on the current heroes on the pitch who helped Chelsea win 14 Premier League games in a row, the club take care of those who donned the royal blue of Chelsea in the past.

According to Matt Barlow from The Daily Mail, Roman Abramovich and Chelsea bought £30,000's worth of Christmas hampers for former players 55 and over.

Tommy Doherty played for and managed Chelsea and revealed that for a number of years now he has been on the receiving end of an amazing gesture - with the club treating him and others to a £300 Christmas hamper.

He said:

"I left Chelsea 50 years ago and every year they send me a £300 hamper from Harrods. Champagne, red and white wine, cheese, biscuits, smoked salmon. A nice hamper."

Gary Chivers started out at Chelsea and went on to make more than 150 appearances for the Blues and the 56-year old is another ex-player to get a hamper from the club at Christmas time.

"It's a great gesture." he added.

Over a hundred hampers were sent out in December and while on the face of things that may not seem like much for one of the biggest clubs in the world, backed by a billionaire owner, the gesture appears to have touched former players.

It's great to see that Chelsea still think about their former heroes.
