Manchester City could be ready to smash their club-record transfer fee after reports suggest that the reigning Premier League champions are in 'talks' to sign an Atlético Madrid star.

Pep Guardiola might be busy with the title challenge from Liverpool, but City are not wasting any time in moving ahead with their summer transfers.

According to Cadena SER, the Premier League title-challenging side are eager to sign Rodri from Atlético.

The Spanish club signed the 22-year-old Spanish midfielder from Villarreal last summer for a reported fee of €20m, which could rise to €5m with various add-ons.

Rodri has made 31 appearances for Los Rojiblancos this season and scored two times so far.

Onda Cero reported earlier this month that City were not the only club keen to snap up the highly rated Spain international, with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Manchester United all linked with a summer move for him.

Rodri has been 'widely tipped to be the successor of Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets for the Spanish national team,' according to Football Espana.

The ball is not in Atlético's court over a potential transfer, despite Rodri signing a five-year deal with the club last summer.

After all, City could always activate the Atlético player's €70m (£60.5m) release clause, and if the deal did move ahead, then it would eclipse the £60m paid for Riyad Mahrez last summer.

Bayern Munich have already raided Atlético for Lucas Hernandez, while City have also been linked with a potential move for Saúl Ñíguez as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

City are top of the Premier League and are one point ahead of Liverpool with two matches remaining.

Guardiola's men will host Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium next Monday, following it up with a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on 12th May for their final match in the league.
