Emmanuel Adebayor Reveals Reason For Odd Togo Squad Number

A tribute to a legend

Emmanuel Adebayor is currently taking part in the African Cup of Nations as skipper of his homeland Togo, and it turns out his rather unconventional squad number is a tribute to an Arsenal legend.

Now 32, Adebayor is actually still without a club level having left Crystal Palace in June last year, and the former Man City, Tottenham and Arsenal forward will be hoping his performances at the tournament in Gabon can help persuade potential suitors that he still has something to offer.

Adebayor is a number of big name players who have left Arsenal in recent years. Here are a few more...

Adebayor was leading the line for Togo against the Ivory Coast this afternoon, but his decision to consistently wear the number four shirt at international level has left us puzzled.

However, finally, it seems there's actually reasoning behind his choice.

According to JOE, Adebayor looked up to former Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu so much in the early part of his career that the number four is a tribute to Kanu, who wore the same number for his country during his playing days.

Adebayor may have soured his relationship with the Arsenal support, but it seems he still has a soft spot for certain aspects of the club.
