The cycle of England disappointment, manager being sacked and new man coming in to a mixture of optimism and pessimism was so predictable this summer it was almost painful. Now it's the time when England get set ready for the same again in two years time.

Following the embarrassing defeat to Iceland in the quarterfinals at the Euros right at the beginning of summer, what feels like an age now, the FA appointed Sam Allardyce as the new manager and Big Sam has chosen his first squad as boss.

England's first game under the former Sunderland manager is next Sunday in a World Cup qualifier against Slovakia and the big man has chosen his first squad.

Phil Jagielka comes back into the squad after missing out on Euros as does Danny Drinkwater but the headline news is West Ham's Michail Antonio who makes his first appearance in a national team squad, coming off the back of two goals in two games.

The other big news sees captain Wayne Rooney being included as a midfielder in the squad but Ross Barkley, one of only two outfield players not to play a minute in the Euros misses out altogether despite a good start for Everton this season.

Marcus Rashford has been picked for the under 21s after a lack of first team football, although it's also arguably better for his development too, meaning there's only three strikers in the squad.

Some might consider Manchester City's Joe Hart lucky as he retains his place despite a lack of football for Manchester City and poor form for England in the Euros.
