Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason had to go to hospital after suffering a devastating injury in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

The former Spurs man was involved in a horrible clash of heads with Gary Cahill in the first half and came out worse.

Cahill was able to play on but Mason had to be stretchered off and taken to a nearby medical facility, where he was attended to. The incident caused a 10-minute stoppage and eventually led to Diego Costa opening the scoring for the Blues in the ninth minute of first-half added time.

Reports surfaced last night in regards to the status of Mason, with The Mirror saying that the 25-year old was fighting for his life.

Hull City then released a statement confirming that he had sustained a skull fracture and underwent surgery but was in a stable condition. Their update earlier today brought more positive news, with Hull saying that Mason had been speaking about the incident.

They were particularly overwhelmed by the flurry of supporter their player received following on from the nasty injury.

Hull captain Michael Dawson visited him at St Mary's hospital along with several members of the club's medical stuff but The Evening Standard also reports that several representatives from Chelsea paid him a visit.

According to reports, Gary Cahill made it his mission to visit Mason soon after the final whistle - as did club captain John Terry. Chelsea coach Steve Holland, who has worked with Mason as part of his coaching duties with the England national team, was also there to check on his well-being.

Mason was in surgery while the trio were present so they were not able to speak to him personally, but they did spend time with his family at the hospital in Paddington.
