On Thursday night, less than 24 hours after the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Sevilla, Leicester City sacked Claudio Ranieri. The Italian has just released a statement about his dismissal.

It is just nine months since Leicester City surprised the footballing world by winning the Premier League however that has not been good enough to save his job this year.

This season the Foxes have struggled to recapture any of the magic of last season and, after losing N'Golo Kante to Chelsea, the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have been shadows of the players who won player of the year awards.

Last night the Foxes Thai owners did the cruelest of things by sacking Ranieri, something that has caused indignation among the fans, and the former Chelsea boss has now released a statement.

The 65 crushingly said "Yesterday my dream died" and that he dreamed of staying at Leicester "the club I love forever and always."

The Roman added his thanks to his wife but mainly to the club saying, "Mostly I have to thank Leicester City Football Club. The adventure was amazing and will live with me forever."

Ranieri finished by saying "No one can ever take away what we together have achieved", referencing his love for the fans, "I hope you will think about it and smile every day the way I always will."

"It's been a pleasure and an honour to be a Champion with all of you."

Leicester will be hoping that their decision to sack Ranieri pays off by them staying up otherwise they'll face further backlash.

No matter your club allegiance it's difficult not to feel for Ranieri, a true gent of the game!
