Laurent Koscielny has revealed he "felt nothing special" watching France win the World Cup.

The Arsenal defender suffered heartbreak prior to the World Cup by sustaining an injury, ruling him out of France's Russian venture.

He picked up a gnarly Achilles injury during Arsenal's Europa League run which scuppered his chances of making it into Didier Deschamps' 23-man World Cup squad.

In his absence, Raphael Varane and Samuel Umtiti starred in the heart of France's defence.

But Koscielny didn't watch as he worked tirelessly during his rehabilitation.

"In truth, I didn't see many matches. I have being working on my rehabilitation from 9am to 1pm, and then from 4pm to 7pm," he told Nice Matin.

Koscielny added: "I saw the last half-hour of France-Peru and a few other games. When they were crowned world champions, I felt nothing special, but I was really happy for the players, the staff.

"It was nice, but it's not that I was enthusiastic. The trip was good for me, but it was also bad.

"The players were united, supportive and mature. Living together for more than a month is not easy, they did it. "

Koscielny did, though, attend the World Cup final and celebrated with his teammates.

Anyway, the 32-year-old will miss the start of the new season as he continues to regain fitness following injury.

Arsenal fans and Unai Emery will be hoping his return is sooner rather than later, but, ahead of opening their Premier League campaign against Manchester City, the club have secured the signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
