Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho following the 3-1 loss to Liverpool at the weekend with the club acting decisively.

Things at Manchester United have not been good all season. Mourinho was criticised last season for the style of football but United at least managed to finish second.

This season it has only got worse. The style hasn't improved and results have got worse whilst there has been fallings out with several players, including Paul Pogba.

On Sunday United were easily beaten by rivals Liverpool 3-1 and Pogba started on the bench and couldn't even get on.

The result was the final straw with Mourinho sacked on Tuesday morning.

The club issued a statement saying, "Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."

In the summer Mourinho lost long time assistant manager Rui Faria when he decided to leave the club.

The former Real Madrid boss didn't replace the role officially and Michael Carrick, who retired from playing at the end of the season, became one of the assistants.

Now Carrick will take over training for the next two days but the club are going to appoint an external caretaker boss till the end of the season.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club at the end of the 2013 season United have sacked three managers with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and now Mourinho all being terminated before their contracts were over.

Mourinho is the first to be sacked before April, with Moyes being sacked with four games left of the season.
