Arsene Wenger's relationship with Manchester United has been frosty at best since he arrived in England 20 years ago, but things could have been so much different for the Frenchman and the Old Trafford faithful.

Before Sir Alex Ferguson performed a U-turn on his plans to retire in 2002, United's board were had drawn up a shortlist of the best manager's in the world to replace the Scotsman, and the Arsenal boss was on it.

In fact, United even made Wenger an offer to take the Old Trafford hot seat. However, due to the heated rivalry between the two clubs, the Frenchman never gave United's approach any consideration, yet The Daily Star claims United were very serious about landing the former Monaco manager.

Former Gunners chairman Peter Hill-Wood added "I don't think Arsene has ever been tempted", with Wenger also claiming he's turned down three recent approaches to manage Paris Saint-Germain.
