Gary Neville insists Manchester United would need to sign a player of the calibre of Xabi Alonso or Luka Modric if they were to replace Michael Carrick.

The Old Trafford legend had a Q&A with fans on Twitter this morning and a replacement for the experienced midfielder was one of the first questions he received.

Nathan Mason asked it:

Despite United struggling in the league and in Europe over recent seasons, Neville isn't lowering his expectations when it comes to potential signings.

The Sky Sports pundit believes United should go after some of Europe's finest passing midfielders like Alonso, Modric, Sergio Busquets or Toni Kroos

It would be a surprise to see such a diehard Liverpool man like Alonso end up at Old Trafford - especially at the age of 35.

Busquets is a pivotal player at Barcelona and looks like he'd play his whole career there, while Zinedine Zidane considers Modric and Kroos as two of his most important midfield men.

But would United have a chance with any of them? They did shell out £89.3 million for Paul Pogba so the club has the money to make more big moves happen.

Carrick has emerged as a key player for Jose Mourinho recently, adding 12 appearances this term to the 421 he had made for the club in the 10 campaigns before.

But he's 35 and will eventually have to hang up his boots, paving the way for new blood in the United midfield.
