Tranmere Rovers striker James Norwood has caused huge outrage after he posted a picture of himself dressed as a street vendor selling brightly coloured sunglasses.

The National League forward, who is Tranmere's top scorer this season, posted on Twitter: "Great Xmas do with the boys. level - fancy dress - completed," as well as a posting a picture of the fancy dress outfit on Instagram.

He quickly deleted the post but the damage was already done. Norwood has since privatised his Instagram account after the picture emerged online.

Here is the Twitter post:

The player, who has represented England C at international level, painted his arms, face and feet black, as well as holding a rack of sunglasses and a megaphone.

A spokesperson from Kick It Out, football's equality and inclusion organisation, told The Sun:

"Although it is likely it was a well-intended fancy dress for a Christmas party, it is ill-thought-out and something that is out-of-date in today's modern world. Even well-intended acts may cause offence and that's something players have to appreciate and consider."

Back in 2014, Chris Smalling was branded 'stupid' and 'offensive' when he wore an Arab headdress with military vest and fake circuit board, while attaching Jager to himself.

Smalling claimed the outfit was 'an attempted comedy play' on the popular 'Jagerbomb' alcoholic drink, but he eventually apologised for his 'ill thought out and insensitive' decision to dress as a suicide bomber

On the positive side of fancy dress, this costume of Colombian keeper René Higuita went viral in 2016 and you can see why,

This is absolutely brilliant:

Not to forget Tottenham's hilarious Christmas Party antics, in which new signing Georges-Kévin N'Koudou started a competition on Twitter for the shits and giggles:
