Wayne Rooney has come under a huge amount of scrutiny in recent months but one person who has defended the 30-year-old in recent times is Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Everyone knows that Mourinho has long had a soft spot for the England International, even during his time at Real Madrid and Chelsea.

In the past, It has been heavily reported that 'The Special One' tried to sign the player after rumours circulated about his future at Old Trafford.

In Friday's Daily Mail, sportswriter Rob Beasley tells how Mourinho "sauntered" over Rooney during his tenure at Chelsea. and in an extract from his upcoming book said:

"Jose's opening line was a corker: 'What do you think of us trying to sign the Fat Boy?'"

The new book about Jose Mourinho's career also details his rivalry and contempt for Arsene Wenger, with one leaked email showing an incredible rant from the Portuguese about the Arsenal boss.

Beasley also tells the story of when Mourinho said that he would 'break' Wenger's face:

"A few days later he was still pumped up about it all, telling me: 'When Mr Wenger criticises CFC and Man United over the deal with Mata...I will find him one day outside a football pitch and I will break his face."
