Simone Zaza Is Trying To Defend His Abysmal Penalty Against Germany

Poor Simone Zaza. He replaced Giorgio Chiellini two seconds before the end of extra-time in last night's Euro 2016 quarter-final against Germany with the sole purpose of taking a penalty in the upcoming shoot out. As we all know, it didn't quite go to plan and instead of being a national hero, the Juventus man has become a meme, instead.

Zaza trotted up to take his spot kick like a pissed show horse doing equestrian and promptly ballooned his penalty into orbit. Italy would go onto lose the shoot out in sudden death and, post-match, Zaza did his best to defend his technique in a pretty heart breaking interview.

"I have always taken my penalties like that and was convinced I'd score.

"I did send Manuel Neuer the wrong way, but unfortunately the ball went too high. It will be difficult, but I want to get over it. I want the Italians to know that we gave everything.

"I missed the most important penalty of my career and it'll be with me for the rest of my life."

We can't imagine he'll attempt the same technique the next time he's entrusted with penalty responsibilities.
