Southampton have provided a conveyor belt of talent to Liverpool with the likes of Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert, Nathaniel Clyne swapping St. Mary's for Anfield.

And if Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard had his way, they'd bring in another player from Southampton in the shape of the highly-rated Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch defender is attracting plenty of interest from around Europe not to mention heavy interest from fellow Premier League rivals Manchester City.

(The Liverpool legend has returned to the club as he works alongside their youth academy)

Following their surprise defeat to relegation battlers Swansea City over the weekend, Gerrard is hoping the acquisition of the 25-year-old will sure up Jurgen Klopp's defensive back-line.

When asked on who he thinks the Red's need, he replied by saying; "Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton."

(Could van Dijk become the latest player to head to Anfield?)

Continuing to add; "But we've had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon."

Unfortunately for the Saint's (or not depending on how you look at it) their skipper hobbled off during their Premier League victory over Leicester City.

But depending on the severity of the injury, it may prevent any club tabling an offer this month.
