10 Goals Every 90's Kid Recreated In The School Playground

10 Goals Every 90's Kid Recreated In The School Playground

A trip down memory lane

Jack Kenmare

Jack Kenmare

At the age of eight, I was lucky enough to witness David Beckham become a national hero at Old Trafford. It was a moment every football fan can fondly look back on, but this wasn't just any goal.

it was a goal that became iconic on local football pitches, parks and playgrounds across the country. It was a time when kids would organise a car boot sale in their back garden, sell everything they owned in order to buy those pearly white Adidas preds.

I can actually recall at least 20 kids trying to 'Bend it like Beckham' on a field in Cumbria during those iconic school days. The smell of freshly cut grass as friends hovered over the ball, David Beckham pose and all.

Everybody wanted to replicate a very special moment in time, even my 50-year-old Grandad came out of retirement to try his hand at this outstanding effort.

That got me thinking, what other goals did us 90's kids recreate in the playground?

Get ready for some serious throwback:

Thierry Henry's swivel volley against Manchester United in 2000.

Henry received the ball from 25 yards out, he had his back to goal to receive the pass and using the momentum of the ball, he chipped the ball up slightly to his left.

The Arsenal forward then swiveled to volley home into the corner of the night, leaving Fabien Barthez planted on the spot. Nobody has since replicated a goal like it.

A goal I tried to replicate hundreds of time but failed in every aspect.

Paulo Di Canio's wonder strike against Wimbledon in 2000

Di Canio's feet did the talking during his iconic spell at West Ham United.

Trevor Sinclair whipped the ball into Di Canio at hip height as the Italian delayed the laws of physics to fire a volley beyond the reach of Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, as both feet eventually landed on the field.

Outstanding, although twisting my ankle on a number of occasions trying to create this goal, was far from it.

Wayne Rooney's thunderbolt against Newcastle in 2005

I might have been at Secondary School at this point but that didn't stop me from recreating a truly remarkable volley.

Seconds after arguing with the referee, Rooney struck the ball with a mixture of anger and venom right into the top corner as Manchester United went onto win the game 2-1.

I lost a few balls trying to recreate this one.

Zinedine Zidane's volley against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002

Regarded by many as the greatest Champions League goal of all time, Zinedine Zidane's strike against Leverkusen in the final was not only an incredible strike but an important one in European football history.

Madrid claimed their ninth Champions League title as Zidane produced the most exquisite and precise volley left footed volley you're ever likely to come across.

If a goal had to define Zinedine Zidane, this would be it.

Ryan Giggs' mazy run against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final in 1999

I sometimes get flashbacks of Ryan Giggs' matted chest hair in my dreams.

Despite that rather alarming image, the 1999 FA Cup Semi-Final replay with Arsenal is regarded as one of the greatest. A missed penalty, a superb strike from David Beckham and one of the greatest individual runs world football has even seen.

The amount of time my local league manager shouted "You're overdoing it Kenmare" as I tried to beat 6 players is all Ryan Giggs' fault.

Steven Gerrard's strike against West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup final

With a resounding 38% of the vote, Steven Gerrard's 35-yard strike against West Ham United was voted as the best goal in FA Cup history.

Considering the FA Cup is over 145 years is proof that Gerrard's incredible effort was one of the best goals of all time. The midfielder levelled the match with seconds left as Liverpool went onto win the cup.

If you didn't try and recreate this while shouting 'GERRRRRARD' then your childhood was non existent.

Dennis Bergkamp's skill goal against Newcastle in 2002

The question still remains - was it a fluke or a moment of genius?

Whatever your opinion, you cannot deny that Dennis Bergkamp's goal against Newcastle at St James that day was mesmerizing, as he took out the hapless Nikos Dabizas with one deft touch.

Nobody has ever performed the like in a game since - trust me I tried several times as a kid.

Matt Le Tissier's solo goal against Newcastle United in 1993

I know what you're thinking. 'How could you recreate a goal when you were 3 months old?'. Although this goal was scored in October 1993, Matt Le Tissier's ridiculous solo effort against Newcastle at St Mary's was idolised by football fans across the country for years after.

Le Tiss instantly brought the ball under control with his heel, guided it past Venison with a deft volley then lifted the ball over Scott's head. Matt then wrong-footed goalkeeper Mike Hooper with an exquisite finish.

What a goal.

Roberto Carlos' free-kick against France in 1997

You know a goal is good when a group of Physicists had to explain it. That's right, they proved that Roberto Carlos' remarkable free-kick against France was not a fluke, despite 'defying physics'.

Roberto Carlos's famous swerving free-kick for Brazil against France in 1997 was 'recreated' up and down the country but nobody could quite mimic the furious swish of his powerful left peg.

Tony Yeboah's wonder goal against Liverpool in 1995

David James spent a few weeks after this game moaning about the fact he should have saved Yeboah's stunner but he was the victim of a Tony Yeboah thunderbolt.

It's nothing to be ashamed of, David.

Yeboah will always be remembered as a Leeds United legend by the Whites' faithful and this goal against Liverpool will go down in history as one of the club's best ever.

Are there any other goals you recreated back in the school days?

Let us know in the comments. We want a trip down memory lane.
