The stats don't lie. Apparently.

A price tag as big as a George Best bar tab and a disappointing first couple of months back in England don't seem to have had to much of a negative effect on Paul Pogba, who is officially the best performing midfielder in Europe, this season.

The CIES Football Observatory have been hard at work collating data to figure out which of the continent's middle men have been the most effective and it turns out United's midfield have been performing better than their club's league position of sixth suggests.

It's an opinion that was shared by Jose Mourinho earlier in the season when United were drawing games for fun and forgetting how to put the ball in the back of the net. The Portuguese manager suggested that United's performances weren't being rewarded with the results they merited, but now, following eight consecutive victories, the Red Devils appear to have found their feet and Pogba has been at the heartbeat of the revival.

The Frenchman is, along with Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara, ranked at 90 by CIES, with his Spanish teammate Ander Herrera following closely behind with 89 points.

The study is based on the performances of players who have played over 900 minutes in Europe's top five leagues.

Unsurprisingly, the top two players overall were Cristiano Ronaldo (94) and Lionel Messi (93).
