England pair Gareth Southgate and Wayne Rooney failed to recognise the performances of Lionel Messi by declining to vote for the Argentine captain.

Cristiano Ronaldo was ultimately crowned the best player of 2016 following his outings for both club and country.

The 31-year-old added another Champions League title in 2016, as well as helping guide Portugal to their first major international honour by claiming the European Championship.

And both the England boss and skipper voted Ronaldo as their best player of 2016 though his rival Lionel Messi was snubbed of a place on their shortlist.

Here's who they went for:

Gareth Southgate

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

2. Antoine Griezmann

3. N'Golo Kante

Wayne Rooney

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

2. Luis Suarez

3. Jamie Vardy

What do you make of their respective votes? Let us know in the comments section below.
