Terrible scenes

Croatia's fans are coming in for intense criticism following the crazy scenes which marred their 2-2 draw with Czech Republic earlier this evening.

Ante Cacic's team were heading for a 2-1 victory in the final five minutes of their second group game at Euro 2016 when some of their fans began launching flares and other objects on to the pitch.

There was also a big explosion right next to a steward and some of their players as they attempted to calm things down.

But play had to be suspended by referee Mark Clattenburg for around six minutes - and Croatia then went on to concede an injury-time penalty which striker Tomas Necid slammed home to grab a draw for the Czechs.

It was unclear what exactly the Croatia fans were hoping to achieve with the stunt as it acted as more of a distraction to their team than anything else.

But problems between supporters of the country and the Croatian Football Federation (CFF) may explain why today's incident occurred.

Independent football writer Aleksandar Holiga is based on Zagreb and is well aware of the Croatian football landscape - and his tweets in the aftermath of the game suggest all is not well:

What punishment will Croatia get this time?
