Carlton Cole was the hottest free agent until he was snapped up by an obscure team.

The former Premier League ace is set to continue to the American trend by playing in the States. Though players leaving England, or Europe for that matter, normally ply their trade in the MLS not the third tier, Carlton.

That's exactly who he has signed for; U.S third division side Sacramento Republic. He's joined for the remainder of the 2016 campaign and will begin training with his new club from 16 August.

The Californian-based side were only founded in 2012 and play in the United Soccer League, two divisions below the MLS.

But the fledgling side do have a familiar face at the helm in Paul Buckle. The former Torquay, Bristol Rovers, Luton and Cheltenham boss appeared delighted with the acquisition;

"Cole needs no introduction. In terms in what he has does in the game, he has played at the highest level throughout his career and it shows he is a top player and very good professional."

"When he became available, we realised the good he can bring, his invaluable experience and that he can score goals."
