The proposal of cross-border leagues in Europe could open the door for Celtic and Rangers.

Both Celtic and Rangers have been lobbying entry south of the border for years, and the clubs have been offered a glimmer of hope as It's reported that many countries are holding active discussions with UEFA about the possibility of cross border leagues, according to The Times.

The notion of having the Glasgow clubs in the England's top flight is nothing new. Following unsuccessful attempts to join, though, UEFA's newest proposal could see The Old Firm derby clash in the Premier League.

UEFA's interim-general secretary Theodore Theodoridis has declared their interest in the idea, saying;

"Cross-border leagues are one way you could rebalance European football and the gaps between leagues."

Previously, there has been resistance from England about the introduction of Scottish clubs into the Premier League following the Football League reconstruction plans.
