Mexican footballer Luis Martinez has suffered a horrendous leg injury in a South American football tournament.

The defender was playing for Liga MX side Tigres against Santos Laguna in the Clausura Tournament, which runs through the winter.

Late in the game, the 22-year old was dueling with the opposition striker Jonathan Rodriguez and looked to make a defensive challenge as the forward attempted to make his way into the penalty area from the left hand-side.

But unfortunately as he went to clear the ball, he got caught in turf and his leg proceeded to twist - making for some incredibly tough viewing.

He was then seen wincing in pain after suffering a truly dreadful injury.

It's not one for the squeamish but you can watch footage of the injury here:

Martinez was then attended to by medics and was taken to the nearest hospital.

He has since tweeted the following:

The game remained goalless and Martinez is set to be on the sidelines for a very long time.

Here's hoping for a very speedy recovery.
