Lionel Messi has reached out to two non-league footballers who suffered horrendous injuries in a hit-and-run crash.

Former Newmarket Town player Shaun Whiter was helping his friend Joey Abbs change a tyre when the pair were hit. Abbs suffered serious leg injuries while Whiter fared even worse, tragically losing both his legs.

As a result, several high profile stars have donated shirts to a charity auction aimed at raising funds for Whiter at a Football Family Day on 9th October.

Messi's Barcelona teammate Arda Turan has also donated a shirt, with Wayne Rooney, John Terry and the first teams of Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, West Ham and England doing likewise.

The teams the duo played for before the accident; Newmarket Town, Soham Town Rangers, Cambridge City and Fulbourn Institute, will also take part in a mini-tournament on the day.

Speaking to BBC Look East, Whiter said of Messi and Turan's gesture, "I can't thank Lionel Messi and Arda Turan enough for donating their shirts and getting them to Cambridge. We're going to auction them off and see what we can get."

Jan Adamec, 40, from Haverhill, was jailed for three years and four months earlier this year after pleading guilty to two charges of causing injury by dangerous driving.
