After losing out to rivals Aston Villa in his bid to sign John Terry, Harry Redknapp wants to add another former Chelsea defender to his Birmingham City ranks, having confirmed his interest in Ashley Cole.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Redknapp stated his desire to bring the experienced left-back to St Andrews, along with Robbie Keane and Stewart Downing.

And now Cole himself, currently contracted with LA Galaxy in the MLS for another six months, has admitted that a return to English football, with Birmingham, at the age of 36, could happen.

When asked about whether he was weighing up the option of signing for Birmingham by journalists in Los Angeles, he said:

"Yeah, I'm just waiting to see, keep my options open.

"It's six months left here, so it's something I'm thinking about yeah."

Though the best years of his career have been and gone, there's no denying that Cole's experience and winning mentality would be highly useful for Birmingham as they bid for promotion back to the Premier League after six consecutive years in the second tier of English football.

Cole has 107 England caps to his name, while he has lifted one Champions League, one League Cup, three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in his time playing for Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.

He moved to the MLS in 2016 after cutting short his spell with AS Roma in Serie A, having made a mere 16 appearances for the Giallorossi.

Weirdly enough, Cole would earn a better salary at Birmingham than he currently makes in LA. Because of the salary cap in the MLS, Cole earns under £300,000 per year playing for Galaxy - with the Dos Santos brothers and Romain Alessandrini, all designated players above the cap, on a better wage than him.
