Ben Stokes Will Be Knighted According To Both Prime Minister Candidates

Ben Stokes will be knighted for his World Cup final heroics, according to after both candidates in the Tory leadership contest.

The all-rounder was named man of the match after hitting an unbeaten 84 in England's thrilling run chase at Lord's on Sunday, leading to calls for a knighthood.

And 'Arise Sir Ben Stokes' are words that Stokes will hear sooner rather than later according to both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt.

Johnson and Hunt, the two candidates to take over Tory leadership, and thus Prime Minister, from Theresa May were asked if they'd knight Stokes.

Johnson answered saying: "I will give dukedoms, whatever - I will go to the maximum, to, what, the Garter King of Arms. Yes is the answer, absolutely."

And Hunt replied with the simpler but still as emphatic "Of course".

Stokes had an excellent World Cup with the bat getting over 50+ against Sri Lanka, Australia and India in the group stages and then coming to the fore in the final.

When Jos Buttler joined him at the crease, at Lord's on Sunday, England were 86-4 and struggling to reach New Zealand's total of 241.

The pair put on 110 for the fifth wicket partnership and looked to be steering Eoin Morgan's side to victory but when Buttler was caught by Lockie Ferguson in fantastic fashion all seemed lost again.

The Durham all-rounder's 84 steered England to parity, especially with his three sixes in the final two overs, and led to the super over.

Despite looking knackered when at the end of his innings Stokes was back out again for the final over with Buttler and the pair made 15, leaving New Zealand with 16 to make but they could only draw level, losing on having scored less boundaries.

The final was the ultimate redemption for the all-rounder, who plays in all three formats of the game, after the 2016 T20 World Cup final.

England faced West Indies and after setting the 'WIndies' 156 to win the bowling attack had left their opponents needing 19 off the final over.

Stokes bowled it and his first four balls all went for six off the bat of Carlos Brathwaite and West Indies won the match.

From that horror to being knighted in just three years, it's quite the turnaround.
