Peter Wright says he's 'got rid' of all his trophies because of Luke Littler in remarkable interview

Peter Wright says he's 'got rid' of all his trophies because of Luke Littler in remarkable interview

Luke Littler has inspired the Scottish darts player to make a fresh start.

Peter Wright says he has ditched all of his trophies and darts after being inspired by the recently-crowned Bahrain Darts Masters champion Luke Littler.

Littler, 16, has changed the landscape of darts in recent weeks. The Runcorn-born thrower reached the World Championship final earlier this month after beating the likes of Raymond van Barneveld and Rob Cross.

He would fall at the final hurdle against world number one Luke Humphries but the teenager bounced back on Friday night by winning his first senior PDC title.

Littler beat three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen in the Bahrain Darts Masters final, just hours after he hit a nine-darter in the opening leg of his quarter-final match against Nathan Aspinall.

The youngster has inspired many fans, young and old, to pick up a set of darts. In fact, world number six Peter Wright has been moved by both Littler and Humphries of late.

Wright, who suffered a surprise second round defeat to Jim Williams at the World Championship last month, claims to have thrown away his trophies and darts so he can "start afresh".

Speaking to the PDC, he said: “I watched the World Championship after I got knocked out, and Luke Littler and Luke Humphries inspired me with what they did.

''Especially Luke Humphries with what he’s won over the last four months; it proves what you can do and achieve if you put the hard work in. Luke Littler is the best thing I’ve ever seen on TV! That’s why he has inspired me to get my finger out.

“I have got rid of all my trophies, got rid of all my darts, so I can start afresh. I want new trophies this year. Last year was terrible and the year before that was terrible, but I’m looking forward to playing this year."

Wright added: “I took time off last year and it didn’t work, we saw that in the Premier League. This year I am hitting everything again.

"Fingers crossed my mindset is to use one set of darts. If I can manage that all year, I’ll be happy and I will be a big threat to everyone.”
