How much golf needs Tiger Woods these days is questionable but seeing the legend of golf back where he belongs on the course is absolutely to be celebrated. After a year out with injury Woods is set to return next month.

Woods has not played at all this year and has been out injured with a back injury since going for surgery last September. The 14 time Major champion had hoped to be back much earlier this year but he has not recovered to play in any of the year's Majors or Ryder Cup.

However the former world number one did confirm that he will play in the Safeway Open on October 13th in Napa, California. It will be his first competitive rounds since the Wyndham Championship in 2015. Talking about his recovery from the injury Woods said:

"My rehabilitation is to the point where I'm comfortable making plans, but I still have work to do. Whether I can play depends on my continued progress and recovery. My hope is to have my game ready to go.

"I'm looking forward to going to California for my foundation event and Safeway. I'm also excited to return to Turkey and Albany. It could be a fun fall."

Woods also announced that he hopes to finish the year by playing the Turkish Airlines Open on November 3rd and the Hero World Challenge at the beginning of December as his road back to the top of the game continues.

Talking about being out so long the American great added, "It was difficult missing tournaments that are important to me, but this time I was smart about my recovery and didn't rush it. It was great spending time with my children Sam and Charlie, and also working on a lot of projects including golf-course design, the upcoming 20th anniversary of my foundation and my book about the 1997 Masters. But I missed competing. I want to thank all the fans for their kindness and concern. I've been a pro about 20 years, and their support has never waned."

Woods' last major was US Open in 2008.
