Discontent among the Arsenal faithful?

Arsenal fans have taken their anger at the club to a new level after starting a petition entitled: "Stop Stan Kroenke From Destroying Our Club" that currently has over 10,000 signatures.

It is no secret that the majority of Arsenal fans are unhappy with the way that the club is being run at the minute, whether that be the lack of big signings, the poor performances on the pitch or the extortionate tickets prices.

Major shareholder Stan Kroenke has been the main target for an Arsenal fan base that does not hide its resentment for the clubs hierarchy.

The American, whom has a net worth of $8 billion following a career in real estate and buying numerous sports teams including the Los Angeles Rams, has alienated himself from the fans of arguably his biggest commodity (Arsenal).

Recently buying a Texas Ranch for $500 million rather than investing money into Arsenal was not a good way to ease tensions.

This, a stark contrast to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich who could be seen living and breathing every kick of Chelsea's 2-1 win over West Ham United on Monday night.

Kroenke is not the only person responsible for the unrest that is amongst Arsenal fans at the minute, with Arsene Wenger surely needing to take some of the blame.

Year after year he promises big signings and rarely delivers, even with the recent signings of Mesut Ozil, Alexis, Petr Cech and Granit Xhaka, it is still seemingly not enough as the team falls short of their objectives year after year.

The movement was started by Jake Shephard, 18, from Wimbledon, he has been a season ticket holder at Arsenal for 10 years.

I spoke to Jake to see what his thinking was behind setting up the petition.

  • Why did you start the petition?

"I run an Arsenal Instagram page (@arsenal_instagunners) with over 125,000 followers and I saw this as a good opportunity to influence change. The fact my father also pays so much towards the club, adds to my passion.

I started the petition when the club added a surcharge for season ticket holders due to more home games than normal last season. However, it seems that over the months fans are still using my petition to vent anger about Kroenke's ownership and Arsenal's lack of success. It's nice to give fans a voice."

  • It seems unlikely that you can have a major impact on a huge club like Arsenal with a petition, so what do you hope to get from this?

"I'm not delusional or immature enough to think that a petition like this will give Kroenke the boot, but if he's even shown it by anyone, he might see the sheer volume of fans unhappy with his leadership of the club. Hopefully it may turn his (and Gazidis') head and give them the kick they need to start working for us - the fans."

It will be interesting to see if this petition leads anywhere if there is a rapid increase in signatures.

If you are an Arsenal fan who wants to see change or a football fan that doesn't like the fact clubs are being run like businesses, then you can sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/stop-stan-kroenke-destroy...
