Tour De France: Stage 20 Preview

It promises to be a cracker!

Today is the last chance to gain time on the yellow jersey of Froome so should prove quite a spectacle of attacking and exciting racing.

The terrain of the day typically favours a large long breakaway that would usually contend, but with the stakes on offer so high today, the likelihood is that no General Classification team will be comfortable letting a large break go.

All the large GC teams will try and control the race from early on, expect teams such as SKY, Movistar and Astana to be to the fore.

The main action will come on the final climb of Col de Joux Plane which comes just before a 12km plummet to the finish; it is likely, therefore, that the hors category mountain will be the springboard to launch a daring descent attack.

The best descenders in the peloton are still yet to prove themselves in this tour, Vicenzo Nibali especially, who is currently spearheading a very lacklustre Astana team.

Due to this poor showing from Astana all tour they will likely come out all guns blazing today, so the top tip would be Nibali, especially if he makes it over the top of the Col de Joux Plane first.

However, again Froome cannot be ruled out, after winning an exhilarating stage from an attack down a descent earlier on in the tour, he has shown great promise in his descending ability.

With Quintana and Valverde looking to gain time, expect them to also be throwing their bodies recklessly down the descent.

Whoever makes it over the line first in Morzine will have risked life and limb down the descent, and whether this will be enough to dislodge the yellow jersey of Chris Froome, remains to be seen.
