UFC Phoenix: Betting Preview

Could this be the end of BJ Penn?

UFC Phoenix takes place in the early hours of Monday morning in the first fight card of 2017 and one that might look like one of the least entertaining and anticipated fight cards in recent times.

However, we still have some bets that may fill your pockets if you've been let down by this weekend's results...

TheODDSbible's Best Bet

Yair Rodriguez to win in Rounds 1, 2 or 3 against BJ Penn- 11/10 at Paddy Power

Twenty-four-year-old Yair "El Pantera" Rodriguez prepares for the biggest fight of his career as he takes on MMA legend BJ Penn in the featherweight division.

Rodriguez is the heavy favourite and the bookmakers price him as short as 1-4 to better BJ who is 11/4 to win his first fight since defeating Matt Hughes at UFC 123 in November 2010.

There is certainly good value in this bet with many questions raised over Penn's true desire to compete with multiple retirements and a reported lack of discipline in training and I'd consider lumping a good sum of money on this!

Outside Bets

Ben Saunders to win by submission - 11/2 at Paddy Power

Ben Saunders takes on Court McGee in what should be an interesting matchup in the welterweight division.

Keep your eyes peeled for a Saunders' armlock victory with this being his favourite tool to secure victory over the also experienced Court McGee. 11/2 is unbelievable value if anyone is looking for a bit of an outside bet.

Joe Lauzon to win by KO in Round 2 - 13/1 at Paddy Power

UFC veteran Joe Lauzon takes on submission specialist Marcin Held in the co-main event in the lightweight division.

Joe Lauzon has been a main stay in the UFC lightweight division for ten years since competing on the Ultimate Fighter Season 5 and is tied with Nate Diaz in receiving the most UFC bonuses in the history of the organisation.

Marcin Held made his UFC debut in November and lost to underdog Diego Sanchez in the co-main event of UFC Mexico City: Dos Anjos vs Ferguson having previously been a top contender in the Bellator lightweight division.

Both men are high level jiu-jitsu practitioners with thirty-two submission victories between them but Lauzon seems to have redeveloped his game to focus on standing and trading with his opponent and I believe that this is too good odds to turn away for a longshot.

TheODDSbible's Treble

Yair Rodriguez, Frankie Saenz and Drakkar Klose all to win - £20 returns £55 at Paddy Power
