Why Paul Pogba's Worth £89 Million

Why Paul Pogba's Worth £89 Million

The Frenchman could be a shrewd bit of business

In easily the biggest deal of this summer (and possibly ever), Paul Pogba has finally moved back to Manchester United for a world record fee, four years after the club let him go, in what Alex Ferguson dubbed as one the biggest mistakes of his career.

Well, Sir Alex's mistake cost the Red Devils an astounding £89 million, in a deal that splits the decision of many experts on whether the 23 year old Frenchman is worth the money.

The dab loving, crazy hairstyle enthusiast is undoubtedly a great addition to the league, with Gary Lineker saying that he is the first high profile footballer to come to the premiership in a long time.

Even as a non-Man United fan, I'm very excited to see what Pogba can do after his experiences with Juventus.

Going into Euro 2016, Pogba was France's poster boy alongside Antoinne Griezmann, however it was definitely the latter who made the bigger impact, with most people being underwhelmed with the new Man United man's performances.

Here are some of his stats:

Appearances - 7
Goals - 1
Chances Created - 11
Shot Accuracy - 54%
Pass Accuracy - 88%
Take on Success Rate - 70%

Following the Euro's many people thought that it could have affected Pogba's price tag, being overshadowed by Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko in the final can pinpointed as a particular low point, however, it didn't seem to do anything to his valuation from either Juventus or United and the two clubs wanted to progress with the deal.

There is no denying that Pogba is a very versatile player and that could be an attribute as to why he didn't have as good a Euro's as people were expecting, with French manager Didier Deschamps deploying him more as a defensive midfielder than his more natural box to box style.

t's impossible to overlook the impact that Jose Mourinho will have on this United team and on Pogba, he is such a good manager that £89 million isn't as much of a risk as it could be, because you can have a certain amount of confidence that Mourinho will get the best out of his player.

It's also important to remember that he is only 23 years old, so despite his already amazing talent he is also an investment. Much like Luke Shaw a couple of seasons ago, the initial fee looks like a lot, but if Pogba plays for Man United for the next 10 years then it works out at roughly £9 million a season, which sounds a lot more reasonable.

The 2015/16 season was statistically the best in Pogba's career this far and Juventus fans have seen the year on year improvement since the Italian Champions signed him, a promising sign that his initial promise has not faded and he looks to be improving.

Since the influx of TV money, the transfer market has become more and more inflated year on year, however, this means that the clubs are earning more money and can afford to spend that extra cash.

To back that statement up, here is a cool fact for you!

Man United legend Bryan Robson signed for the club for a then record British transfer fee of £1.5 million in 1981. That means that Bryan Robson's fee cost the club more in comparison to the money that they were making at the time. So as much as £89 million is a crazy amount of money in the real world, for Man United in the current market it is merely a drop in the ocean.

Another big chunk of the money that Man United paid Juventus for Pogba was the agent's fees. Mino Raiola, who also boasts clients such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Blaise Matuidi.

The Italian born, Dutch agent made just under £25 million in the Pogba deal, so he has had a very nice summer! That huge chunk though, means that United only really paid £65 million for the player.

There's no denying whatever your opinion on the price tag is that Pogba is an amazing addition to the Premier League and I for one am excited to see what he brings and hopefully see a few crazy celebrations along the way.
