FWA Footballer of the Year announced as voting for top three players revealed

The FWA Footballer of the Year has been revealed.

Phil Foden has been voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

Manchester City star Foden won with 42 per cent of the vote, beating Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and City teammate Rodri to the prize.

Martin Odegaard, Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer made up the rest of the top six, while another 12 players received votes from the FWA, which has almost 900 members.

Foden has enjoyed a stellar season with City, scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions.

Foden told City's official club website: "Being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year is a huge honour. I’m very, very happy to receive this award but I could not have done it without the help of my team-mates.

"I want to thank all my team-mates as well as Pep and the coaches for all the support and advice they have given me.

"I strive to be the best that I can be every single day and that is all down to the way the manager and my colleagues always seek to improve and get better.

"I’m immensely proud to have won this award. Now I am focused on seeking to finish the season as strongly as possible and to try to help City win more trophies."

Foden's City clubmate Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw won the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award for 2024.

Shaw has fired City to the brink of the Women's Super League title with 21 goals in 18 games this season, and pipped Chelsea and England star Lauren James in the vote.

Shaw’s team-mates Alex Greenwood and Yui Hasegawa came third and fourth.

It is the second time in five years that City players have won both prizes, after Raheem Sterling and Nikita Parris topped the voting in 2019.
