Getafe president reveals the one other club who have 'made contact' about signing Mason Greenwood from Man Utd

Getafe’s president revealed the one other club that had made contact with Manchester United about signing Mason Greenwood.

Getafe’s president revealed the one other club that had made contact with Manchester United about signing Mason Greenwood.

The Times claimed last month that United were hoping to cash in on Greenwood in the summer upon the completion of the 22-year-old’s loan deal at Getafe.

The one-cap England international has not played for United since 2022, when he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The Crown Prosecution Service went on to drop the charges in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their involvement and new material came to light. Greenwood has always denied the accusations.

Upon the charges being dropped United launched an internal investigation into Greenwood’s conduct which resulted in both parties “mutually agreeing” that the forward should “recommence his career away from Old Trafford”.

They went on to loan him out to La Liga side Getafe, with the Spanish outfit having since been impressed by the United academy graduate.

Indeed, Getafe President Angel Torres has revealed that he wants to keep Greenwood at the club next season but may face competition from La Liga giants Barcelona.

He told Radio Marca: “Atletico have not asked me, the only one who has asked me was Laporta when he was here. I spoke with him and Deco and they asked me because they like the player.

“If it depends on the boy and his parents and the club, I think he will continue another year.

“In Manchester, the sports director who I spoke with last week, if there is a good offer, they would like to sell because he is not going to return there.

“But if it depends on his family, the fans and so on then I think he will stay, we recovered him after 16 months not playing. We are going to have to wait a month and a half or two months. (…) What I think is that he is going to stay.

“To sign, all the teams, not only Barcelona, also Getafe, Atletico… we need to first sell and then buy. That’s why it’s going to be a long summer. The situation of Spanish football is that first, it needs to sell and then buy. It’s the problem that 80% of the clubs have.”
