In an unexpected turn of events (actually, probably not all that expected, given the subject matter), Tyson Fury has denounced his gypsy heritage and changed his name.

The former Heavyweight Champion of the world, who has not set foot in a ring since dethroning Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf back in 2015, had a rollercoaster of a 2016, enduring injury, drugs controversy and a battle with depression.

Now, Fury has taken to Twitter to denounce his gypsy roots, claiming he no longer associates with the culture.

In addition to this, Fury has also changed his name to Gorga Tys:

We've heard of 'New Year, New Me' but this seems a little extreme, even by Fury's standards.

It will be interesting to see how the traveller community, which Fury previously seemed so proud to represent, branding himself 'The Gypsy King', react to the 28-year-old's decision to ditch his name and the culture.
