Max Verstappen responds to Mercedes speculation after his father’s comments on Red Bull future

Max Verstappen responds to Mercedes speculation after his father’s comments on Red Bull future

Max Verstappen has been linked with a move to Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement.

Max Verstappen has responded to speculation linking him with a move from Red Bull to Mercedes.

Last month, it was confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes for Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion will drive alongside Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.

Since the news was confirmed, a host of different drivers have been linked with a move to Mercedes, including the likes of Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon, Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri.

Last week, Red Bull superstar Verstappen was also linked with a move to the Silver Arrows after his father Jos was seen talking to Toto Wolff.

Ahead of this weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah, Verstappen was asked whether he would stay until the end of his Red Bull contract.

The Dutchman said: “That has always been the intention of signing. That is why we signed (for) so long, to be here, and of course it is about the performance of the car and from 2026 onwards.

“It's a bit of question marks with new regulations but I knew that when I signed my contract.”

Verstappen added: “But I also know what they have done for me in my career. The intention is absolutely to stay with this team because I really enjoy it and I am happy within the team. As long as we perform, there is no reason to leave.”

Current Mercedes driver George Russell was also asked about Verstappen potentially joining him next season. The Brit said: “Any team wants to have the best driver line-up possible. And right now, Max is the best driver on the grid. So if any team had a chance to sign Max, they would 100% be taking it.

“The question is more on the other side, on his side and Red Bull's side. Obviously so much going on there. We don't know what truly is going on behind closed doors and ultimately it's none of our business right now.”
